Finally, The Spiral Road is available on DVD, and that alone is worth the cost of this collection. Amazon indicated the format was standard and I was prepared to gain that. Thankfully, it was issued in widescreen. I agree this is an obscure title, but an beneficial movie. Grab it while you can.

It is huge to contemplate Universal release more of Rock Hudson’s films to dvd. And thankfully the three discs in this collection are single sided. I thoroughly enjoyed The Spiral Road – a very suitable drama dwelling in and around Borneo in 1936 and which also stars Burl Ives. Both are doctors and surprised I had never heard of it until now. By the design, three of the films, including Spiral Road, are presented in their OAR of 1:85 ( widescreen ) and are Anamorphic. The brand on the dvd incorrectly lists Spiral Road as 2:35. If you are a fan of Rock Hudson don’t hesistate to take up a copy.

Sasha Baron Cohen’s latest creation, Bruno, makes his plot to America to become uber-famous any intention he can. And he goes through lots of different attempts on his contrivance. Acting, interviewing celebrities, guesting on talk shows, becoming straight, he tries many methods, each with it’s painfully amusing result. You’ll appreciate the Paula Abdul interview, particularly.

The interactions with people are fantastic, and you will be appalled at what some parents will do to come by their children into expose business. Unbiased splendid.

There are a lot of shocking/uncomfortable comical moments (be prepared for gratuitous male nudity), and I am no certain how they will own up for repeated viewings, but in a crowded theater, it was a yell. The ending is worth the buildup, and stick around for the closing song.

I laughed so hard that my face was hurting, and my wife was crying from laughing so hard. It takes a while to recover, but soooooo worth it!

NOT for the kids.

I have to peer Bruno more than once, most people probably do too. That’s because Bruno is one of those rare movies where you’re laughing so hard at some parts you know you’re missing the next comical thing. As satisfied, Austrian fashionista and celebrity-wannabe Bruno, Baron Cohen continues his jaw-droppingly crass and cross stealth comedy antics. Purportedly, Baron Cohen has been beaten up while in character, so it only seems glowing that he makes his audience laugh hard enough to injure.

Of course the usual Baron Cohen caveat is in order: yes, its offensive, yes, its execrable, yes, there is a LOT of nudity, mostly male. If any of this is not your cup of tea, that’s dandy, no hard feelings. If you don’t mind the occasional watch of literally bouncing balls in the name of comedy, Bruno is pure gold.

Post Borat fame has probably necessitated that more of this movie be staged, with at least some of the people (a talk point to host, the driver of an oncoming car) in on the joke. But scripted or natural- its wickedly silly. And enough of it is genuine- including Bruno’s interview/sex tape with Ron Paul, parents of would-be baby stars volunteering their 12-month-olds to play Nazis, ex-gay ministers, straight-rally wrestling audiences and general bystanders to Bruno’s public antics.

Bruno balances the line between social commentary and comedy like a model on a catwalk. As with Borat half the humor comes from people reactings (or not) to the character’s immoral behavior, and half from the eerily agreeable caricature Baron Cohen creates. Fame-hound Bruno is everything narcissitic, uninformed, vain and with the all-too-common undeserved sense of entitlement that makes up the worst of American pop culture. As with Borat, Bruno learns some life-lessons and grows as a person by the destroy of the movie- as Baron Cohen always seems to want to better his audience, even if he has to beat them over the head with a dildo to do it.

Janus Films participated in the restoration of this film and you would contemplate that that alone would ensure high standards of quality. And for the most section it did. But unmentioned in all the reviews of this DVD is the fact that the best film of the three, Toby Dammit,does not have its English soundtrack included.

Terence Mark is English and he spoke his fragment in English.(and what an incredible bit of verbal it was) It unbiased ain’t the same thing in dubbed French by another actor. An earlier release of this film delivered the English soundtrack as an option but did not allow you to turn off the English subtitles! (Some of the people that place these things together are really lacking in simple, approved sense.) Also the image quality on the previous release is venerable and not proper curious. Image quality on this unique DVD is first-rate. Rich color and very titillating. So the fear of it all is you are left with a very well done restoration with a rather primary detail inexplicably left out. The English soundtrack exists and isn’t this the whole point of DVD’s? I took a chance buying this DVD hoping for an improved version that fixed some of the problems on the earlier release.

The frustrating thing is that it is so finish to being there, but a French speaking Terence Notice is fair absurd. Janus Films was also involed in the Criterion Collection recent version of Amarcord and they did it perfectly. Everything is there. Wish they extinct as powerful care on this one.

As originally conceived by Fellini, the Toby Dammitt segment was, imho, the greatest work he ever committed to film. Taut, lean, stylish and very effective. I saw the film when it was first released and am fortunate enough to have this segment on an extinct beta tape.

Beyond Terrence Stamp’s fantastic delivery, is the crucial element of the english actor being alone and isolated in Italy by his language, slowly pushing him deeper into surrender and madness. All of this is lost in the original French dubbed edition.

(On the other hand, it must be a plus to have the first two segments, overdubbed into English for US release, befriend to their modern French. However, these segments are competent, or somewhat racy at best, compared to unbelievable finale.)

You’re getting all 68 episodes (Including Pilot and Finale) spread out across 11 single sided discs. Unlike the Canadian releases, there are no flipper discs to be found in this complete state. Each disc has 6 episodes on it (Instead of the usual 4) Which brings me to my only complaint.

These discs are the same as the US releases seen here on Amazon. (Priced at 20 apiece) The 1st and 3rd season are each spread out across 4 discs, and the 2nd season across 3 discs. (11 total) While portray quality is not up to our standards of say… Lost. Due South wasn’t a high profile, tremendous budget indicate to start with. I’m not going to lie. The reveal could search for better with re-mastering. But as long as you have a decent TV, it certainly looks better then when it was broadcasted. Certainly better then VHS, thats for determined.

The quality complaint is mostly aimed at the first season though. Season 2 and 3 watch noteworthy cleaner and clearer. At a label of $33, I’d question remarkable worse. Quality’s no more worse then the first few seasons of the X-files. It’s a semi successful 90’s TV exhibit, what does one demand?

All 11 discs are housed in what is essentially a full DVD case. It takes up very tiny place on the shelf. (Examine customer photo’s) If the case was dropped though, request a pile of plastic. Though the discs won’t procure harmed.

So again, you’re getting the complete series, all 4 seasons in there American release. Meaning season 3 and 4 were combined to beget a single 3rd season. Whether it’s the Canadian listing, or the American listing, it’s always going to be 68 episodes in total. The box place has no special features. Most importantly though, no flipper discs. I got this for $33 on Amazon.ca, which is very cheap for a complete present with 68 episodes.

It doesn’t survey like Due South is getting a re-mastered Blu-ray treatment anytime soon (Though it obviously should) With all the confusing DVD’s releases, the split up seasons, and flipper disc/quality issues, this is the most affordable and easiest design to catch the complete demonstrate on DVD. Unless you want to exercise the extra cash on the UK season sets, this is a must recall for fans who do not gain the note.

Did I mention how huge the indicate is?

FYI – Since the listing doesn’t let you know specifically, Season 3 in Due South: The Ultimate Collection INCLUDES Call of the Wild Parts 1 & 2 so you don’t need to win the separate DVD.

This is the final box plot with the Naruto filler episodes so for hardcore fans who disliked these episodes rejoice as this marks the destroy of the fillers.

The station has the finale of the Kurenai/Yakumo saga, and after that we have Kiba and Naruto with an assignment to protect a rather gross client and the supposedly priceless heirloom with him during their mosey and as one might question difficulty does near for our wayward travelers. These episodes for myself were huge to observe and I’m finally contented to be getting the entire Naruto series state in uncut episode box sets, don’t earn me obnoxious I enjoyed watching them on Adult Swim but even than they had them censored and it was a dinky irritating to sometimes seek the episodes like that and it’s also murky that they decided to murder Naruto on cartoon network but oh well. The one right complaint I’m gonna have with the Naruto Shippuden series is that they kept the same order for the character of Naruto in the dubbed audio I mean arrive on he’s supposed to be fifteen going on sixteen his speak should be a itsy-bitsy more manly but other than that murky plot the series is aloof blooming genuine and spicy so no other complaints about the display.

Every director probably has one movie that he pours piece of himself into. For Spielberg, it was ET, Lucas had American Graffiti. Here, Tim Burton poured into the soul of Edward Scissorhands the world of an outsider, a creation of an broken-down inventor (wonderfully played by Vincent Designate) who passes on before he can effect Edward(wonderfully played by Johnny Depp) . Edward is one day discovered by Peg Boggs, a entertaining Avon lady, who takes Edward home to suburbia, a community of multi-colored houses that could only advance from the mind of Burton and production designer Bo Welch. Danny Elfman delivers probably his most inviting come by in this report. The DVD looked like it would be incredile with what was announced, but it would have to lose starts for what I thought: 1) Audio commentary by Burton and Elfman: Both of these guys do not talk all the design through the film, (though it does sound a petite better than Devlin and Emmerich on ID4’s DVD & Barry Levinson and Tommy LEe Jones on Men In Sad, who chatter on like inane movie theater patrons) . But most of the time I found myself wondering when they would yell again. Burton probably speaks 12-15 times through most of the movie, but it sounds more like he’s having tiny afterthoughts. Elfman’s audio plays after definite music segments are done (his background music plays over the dialogue so we hear outright how it sounds) . 2) Tim Burton plan art: after seeing The Tarzan Collector’s Edition, this was a letdown, with only about 7 pieces of art (5 concepts of Edward, 1 of the Inventor, and 1 of Edward’s spot in the mansion’s attic) . 3) The featurette talking about the film is also a letdown, as there is nothing that was reall famous (I was really looking forward to hearing how Stan Winston Studios made the Scissorhands props) . The only frigid indispensable is the interactive menu, made like a pop-up book of the mansion Edward is found in. If you are looking to get a immense movie, derive this DVD. If you are into those that promise fantastic extra features, pass this one up.

2004-2005 will go down as a banner era for American fans of Kaiju Eiga. Not only has it seen Sony’s excellent releases of most of the Showa-era Godzilla films, but Media Blasters’ equally-excellent DVDs of other Toho monster classics such as Dogora, Varan the Astounding, Atragon and others.

To this good roster now add Universal’s release of King Kong Vs. Godzilla and King Kong Escapes, in anamorphic widescreen. KK Vs. G is an appetizing romp, beloved among G-fans for: 1) The fight between the two monsters at the Diet Building in Tokyo; 2) the wonderful scene where Kong swings Godzilla around by his tail; and 3) being the first Godzilla film in color. Yes, the Kong suit is truly goofy, yet both it and the actor inside indicate loads of personality. And the film boasts a pretty Akira Ifukube gather.

But for my money the suitable gem here is King Kong Escapes. What makes this film so special can be summed up in one word: Mechani-Kong. This giant robotic version of the Eighth Wonder is as icy as the shaggy gorilla-suited Kong is goofy, and he certainly ranks as one of the greatest monsters in the Toho pantheon. If you’re a fan of Mechagodzilla (and who isn’t? ), you owe it to yourself to stare his precursor in his only film appearance. (Icing on the cake: the first appearance of Gorosaurus, Maestro Ifukube’s amazing procure, and a deliciously over-the-top performance by Eisei Amamoto as “Dr. Who” — no relation to the renowned Timelord!)

It’s quiet hard for me to bear that these two extraordinary films are getting a quality DVD release.

I won’t accumulate into the technical side of this review because, A) I’m not a technically-oriented person, and B) I’m simply amazed I even have a DVD player at all. Glowing remarkable EVERY DVD I’ve ever watched has better sound and portray quality than any single VHS tape I’ve seen. That having been said, it’s time for me to expound on what I have found to be one of the most provocative reinventions of the Eighth Wonder of the World ever committed to celluloid, if not necessarily grandiose.

KING KONG VS. GODZILLA

The third Godzilla film – and the first one in color – picks up some time after the little-seen “Godzilla Raids Again”: our current fire-breathing reptilian bursts out of his Arctic entombment thanks to a clumsy submarine crew and heads relieve for Tokyo to do some exercises honest as (surprise, surprise) King Kong surfaces on Faro Island and, through the means of a typically-greedy businessman, ends up making a beeline straight for the Substantial G.

Now you don’t go into a movie like this, let alone any “Versus” movie, expecting gut-wrenching physical drama on the order of ABC’s Wide World of Sports; what you should seek information from is pure and total fanboy’s-dream absurdity of premise and relentlessly-high camp in execution (spy “Freddy vs. Jason”) . Never mind how Kong came encourage to life after plummeting to his death, or how he ended up on a Japanese island or even how he grew an extra 350 feet in the interim – if you’re one of those people whose brain will be racked trying to figure those things out, this is NOT the movie for you. Admittedly, the film looks its age, but then most of the best of these movies are visibly dated anyway. And to be just, there’s a blooming bit of satire in KKvG that holds up within the campy context of the film: Substantial Business looking for the next ad sensation, advocacy for smoking and drinking and loud pop music, the sly underpinnings of Kong and Godzilla chasing the same young woman, military intelligence suggesting that a stout hole fat of dynamite can cessation a living four-hundred-foot-tall nuclear bomb. No kid is going to care about this stuff, but that’s O.K.; the monster sequences are some of the most technically ornate in the series’ early history.

Having said all of this, the film does have two necessary weaknesses, which are the same in glorious noteworthy every Godzilla movie but here are more heavily accentuated: A) the emphasis on the human drama rather than the slugfest, and B) an “over-Americanization” of the film. I’ll gain to the latter in a moment, but first, the human angle doesn’t suit the characterize as well as it should. There’s some attempt at soap opera drama spellbinding a brother and sister living in Tokyo and her boyfriend, but it never really goes any further than the setup. Which in this case is a shame, since as gleefully cheesy as the movie is already, this could have made it a genuine riot. The more detrimental spot with this film is the aforementioned “over-Americanization” of the film, which in this case involves both erratic dubbing AND inserting U.S.-filmed footage, a la Raymond Burr in the current “Godzilla”. However, it doesn’t work here. Firstly, because it’s presented under the banner of the United Nations News Network (they distinct haven’t been the same since Catwoman, Joker, Penguin and Riddler vaporized the Security Council) so as to do a fake sense of “ringside commentary”, and secondly, because in addition to American actors, you have English-speaking Latin Americans and Asian-Americans figuring into the mix as well. Having an Asian-American speaking more impeccable English than most present-day Caucasians may have been intended to bolster the film’s credibility, and to that destroy Toho deserves credit, but when the rest of the movie involves badly-dubbed Japanese actors, it kind of disrupts the story roam.

Lastly, there’s the stars themselves. Godzilla looks ample in this one; Toho obviously took titanic care to acquire positive their biggest star looked his best in color. The opening defensive against Godzilla may be one of the best minute sequences in the early films. And while the character has embryonic hints of silliness in his performance, he’s unruffled a mean mofo and it largely comes through whenever he’s on veil. By inequity, Kong is the more comedic of the two, and everything about him suggests a more cartoonish near, even the suit. This ape suit is easily among the worst ever filmed, but it might have been slash a minute more slow if not for a truly bad Kong head stale for close-ups. This second conceal, I’m guessing, was meant to develop the character more expressive than the shroud on the “stunt” suit would allow, but at least there Kong quiet looks reasonably menacing. Had they honest stuck with the “stunt” cover, that might have made this representation of the Kong character less overly goofy; as Captain Kirk once said, too distinguished of anything is not necessarily a expedient thing.

All in all, though, KKvG is likely to provide a top-notch time for those of us weaned on Saturday-night Creature Features. For its efforts, it’s level-headed spellbinding to witness.

KING KONG ESCAPES

Now this one is a apt rarity. I’ve only ever seen this movie once before on cable. It was apparently Toho’s attempt to branch their fresh version of Kong out into his have series of films, to diminutive avail. But it serene is fun to contemplate for as great as any Japanese monster mash is. In a nutshell, this one involves Kong (now on Mondo Island rather than Faro – apparently they ran out of soma berries) becoming the subject of the exasperated desires of the scientist Dr. Who (again, no relation to the renowned Time Lord – how the distributors of this movie avoided a lawsuit, I don’t know) . Crazy ragged Dr. Who needs super-strong Kong to dig through his mines looking for a remarkable radioactive substance for Who’s mysterious benefactor (the blooming Mie Hama, who got additional exposure to American audiences around this time as Kissy Suzuki in the 007 outing “You Only Live Twice” and as Teri Yaki in “What’s Up, Tiger Lily? “) . To carry out this kill, Who kidnaps Kong’s novel human friends, Commander Nelson and his crewmates Susan and Jiro, to try to coerce him to obeying Who’s orders when the usual mind-control ploys fail. When Kong escapes, and Nelson’s team upright unhurried him, Who sends out the ultimate super-weapon to bring Kong to his knees…(wait for it) …MECHANI-KONG!!! Yup, the ‘giant monster’s nasty robot twin’ gag starts apt here, even before Mecha-Godzilla.

The movie itself, like all such fare imported from Toho, is grade-A cheese, yet that’s allotment of its charm. And unlike KKvG, it’s completely unfettered by American-filmed sequences, even though the American actors at some points do raze up dubbing themselves over (maybe the distributors saw the discrepancies in KKvG? ) . In terms of pacing, it’s also a great faster movie than KKvG, something that ultimately worked to these movies’ favor as time went on.

The characterization here is distinguished stronger than KKvG, even if doesn’t execute a whole lot of sense on a couple occasions (as when Madame X predictably switches sides because she’s got the hots for Commander Nelson) . As for the monsters, Kong starts out perfectly in line with where we last left him in KKvG, and ultimately ends up becoming a tremendous kid who will follow elegant Susan around anywhere (you have to give Toho credit on this secure too: at least their version of Kong aloof has that weakness for the ladies) . Mechani-Kong is the actual worn link in this chain, since he’s simply a titanic remote-controlled toy for Dr. Who, but he proves substandard enough to leave a memorable impression.

The monkey suits here are a bit of an improvement. Mechani-Kong, being an armor-plated robot and genuinely cool-looking at that, really doesn’t qualify for comparison to the quality of the ape costume in KKvG, but with Kong in this one at least the heads are consistent. Toho apparently tried to fair the proportions of the suit in relation to those of a true gorilla, which would almost work if not for the fact that the stuntman in the Kong suit – Haru Nakajima, Godzilla’s portrayer for the better allotment of Great G’s series – doesn’t really exhaust many ape-like mannerisms in his performance.

KKE is, in many ways, a better film than KKvG. Which is saying a lot for movies as wonderfully corny as these.

The bottom line: advance for the Expansive G, stop for the nefarious robot twin. There are plenty of worse ways to consume your Saturday nights.

The Combat Classics 50 Movie Pack consists of war films primarily spot during World War II that have fallen into public domain. As fans of the Mill Creek Entertainment products have arrive to inquire of, the quality of the transfers in this boxed region range from graceful to satisfactory, but the entertainment value of these movies is better than usual. There are no documentaries included in this plot and only a handful of foreign films shot using a figurehead American star TV movies are incorporated. I’d have given chunky marks, except for one well-known caveat – 25 of the 50 films listed can be found in other Mill Creek 50 Movie Packs: 17 were included in “War Classics”, 5 in “Action Classics”, 2 in Historical Classics and 1 each from “All-Time Classics” and “Hollywood Legends”. In fact, the mediocre `Yellowneck’ has been now been included in three different 50 Movie Pack collections. Since the recently released “TV Favorites” 150 episode pack includes 100 episodes previously included in other sets, this is a disturbing trend.

As an avid WWII movie buff, I found most of this collection features older movies (30 from 1940 – 1959) with another 10 from the 60’s and half a dozen from the 70’s. There were even two from 1934 and 1936. Most of them are worthwhile with a few ‘duds’ thrown in to acquire the magical number of 50. For instance, I don’t reflect many of us would request Mexico and Pauncho Villa to be included in a ‘Combat Classic’ Collection. Realizing the cost and hours of entertainment to be realized, it was toothsome for the most section. Don’t request all of them to be top knotch movies but if you bask in older movies then you’ll score this collection worthwhile.
